Tabula Peutingeriana

Gli itinerari erano compilazioni geografiche assai diffuse al tempo dei Romani, nelle quali venivano descritti i percorsi o le stazioni di tappa o le rotte marittime tra le diverse località dell'Impero, con l'aggiunta di altre notizie utili ad uso dei viaggiatori. Tra queste compilazioni schematiche un posto di rilievo spetta alla Tabula Peutingeriana, che rappresenta il mondo anticamente conosciuto, ad eccezione dell'estremo occidente, su una stretta e lunga striscia di pergamena; su di essa si voleva sostanzialmente sintetizzare e raffigurare per grandi linee l' Impero Romano. Per il resto, il linguaggio iconografico adottato nella tavola è estremamente conciso: le città sono indicate da piccole case o torri, quelle più importanti da mura turrite, ad eccezione di Roma, Antiochia e Costantinopoli, che sono distinte da un circolo con una figura al centro. La pergamena, che prende il nome dal proprietario Konrad Peutinger di Augsburg, nella sua forma attuale è una copia medievale di un originale del IV sec. d.C.
