Onorio III (1216-1227)

Romano, già canonico di Santa Maria Maggiore, fu amministratore della Santa Romana Chiesa. Esortò Federico II a prendere l’iniziativa per la crociata; in realtà una grande impresa che riunisse tutta la cristianità occidentale, come era nei piani del pontefice, appariva già impedita in partenza dalle persistenze contese tra Francia ed Inghilterra.
Ai lati del portale della sagrestia della Cattedrale, sono presenti 2 testine, una di Federico II e l’altra di Giovanni di Brienne, Re di Gerusalemme: entrambe ricordano il loro incontro nella Cattedrale, avvenuto nel 1223 alla presenza del Pontefice Onorio III per preparare il piano di una futura Crociata nei luoghi santi.
